Construction Crew Strikes Utility Line, Causing Traffic Backups in Downtown Bethesda

by | Sep 8, 2017

Two southbound lanes in front of the Apex Building on Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda were closed Friday morning after a construction crew working on demolishing the building struck a utility line.

Alison Wertzler, a senior director with Carr Properties, which is redeveloping the Apex Building, said Friday morning crews working on a sheeting and shoring tieback operation at the building struck an unidentified Verizon line about 12 feet underground.

The lane closures led to significant traffic backups during the morning rush hour.

Wertzler said Verizon crews were working at the site to repair the line. She did not immediately know when the repairs would be completed.
