The StonebridgeCarras project could bring a 225-room hotel and 390,000 square feet of workspace to what is now the site of an aging police station and a Carpet Palace.
A company representative on Monday evening told community members that StonebridgeCarras wants to design the high-rise as a gateway to the Pearl District.
“We really wanted to make a sort of pronouncement,” Jane Galbraith Mahaffie said.
StonebridgeCarras will take over the police property at 7359 Wisconsin Ave. after building a replacement station. The new station at 4823 Rugby Ave. is nearly complete and should be ready for operation by fall, according to the developer.
The proposed high-rise also will cover properties at 7351 Wisconsin Ave. and 4630 Montgomery Ave.
Galbraith Mahaffie presented the plan to a group of about 15 people Monday at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center. She said the proposed building with about 400,000 square feet of office space would recognize the increasing fluidity in where and how people work and would include a variety of gathering places.
StonebridgeCarras is planning a plaza with seating, a water wall and public art at the front of the building. The three-story Mustard Seed next door to the high-rise site is small enough that plenty of sunlight will find its way into the plaza, she added.

The high-rise also will have a landscaped roof with a canopy covering, she said.
The developer is looking to submit project plans just after Labor Day and break ground in early 2019. The construction should be completed by 2021, according to a company press release.
Galbraith Mahaffie said StonebridgeCarras hasn’t yet picked a hotel brand for the building.
