Montgomery County, named after Richard Montgomery is a county in the state of Maryland, north of Washington, DC and southwest of Baltimore. It is one of the most affluent counties in the United States and has the highest percentage (29.2%) of residents of the age of 25 who hold post-graduate degrees.

It is an important business and research center. It is the third largest biotechnology cluster in the US. Many large companies are based in Montgomery County including, Discovery Communications, Lockheed Martin, Travel Channel, Hughes Network Systems and GEICO. The top employers in the county are U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Montgomery County Public School, U.S. Department of Defense, Montgomery County Government and U.S. Department of Commerce.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) provides countywide law enforcement services. Montgomery County Public Schools serves the county in addition to the several private schools within county limits. The county is also served by Montgomery College. Although there is no public university in the county, the state university system operates at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville that allows students access to programs from several of the state’s public universities.

The largest highway is I-270, which connects I-70 with Washington, DC. Route 355 is another major road in the county starting in Washington DC all the way up to Frederick County. Both the Ride-On and Metrobus service the county along with Amtrak, MARC and Washington Metro.
