Projected Opening Date for Dean & DeLuca in Bethesda Pushed Back to 2019

by | Nov 7, 2017

Construction has stopped on the downtown Bethesda location for gourmet grocer Dean & DeLuca, and the store’s projected opening has been delayed to 2019, a project spokeswoman said.

Developer JBG Smith had originally estimated the store would open in the fall of 2017. Progress on the space has halted because Dean & DeLuca is working on changes to the store design, project spokeswoman Gabrielle Nadel wrote in an email.

The store project at 4749 Bethesda Ave. is part of JBG Smith’s overhaul of the area near the intersection of Bethesda and Woodmont avenues. The company is also developing a 14-story building at 4747 Bethesda Ave. that will provide about 280,000 square feet of office space and 7,000 square feet of retail space.

JBG Smith has announced plans to move its headquarters into the new office building after the project’s completion, scheduled for 2019.

“[W]e anticipate that Dean & DeLuca will open along with the office building in 2019,” Nadel wrote.

The upscale food retailer is best known regionally for its Georgetown store, which offers cheese, charcuterie, baked goods, produce, meats, seafood, coffees and prepared food.

The new timeline for the store’s opening was first reported by local blogger Robert Dyer.
