A National Weather Service meteorologist predicted Friday morning that Montgomery County will likely see 1 to 3 inches of snowfall Saturday morning.
“We’ll start to see precipitation move into the area late tonight, probably after 3 a.m.,” Andrew Snyder, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia, said. “There might be a little precipitation before that, but the bulk will fall very late tonight.”
“There will be steady precipitation during the morning hours tomorrow, with it tapering off into the afternoon,” Snyder said.
Residents in the Montgomery County area can expect to see snow accumulate on grassy and elevated areas, according to Snyder. He said snow is not likely to stick to well-traveled roads in the area, but snow might stick to roads shaded by trees.
The weather system is the same one that brought snow to Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi Thursday and Friday.
“It’s snowing in Mississippi right now,” Snyder noted around 9:30 a.m.
He added that earlier predictions for just flurries in the area have changed as the weather system tracked further west than expected. It was initially expected to stay mostly over the Atlantic Ocean, according to Snyder.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Friday, which is in effect from midnight to 4 p.m. Saturday and warned of potential slippery road conditions.
Snyder said the weather service is tracking another snow system that could bring snowfall to the region Tuesday, but at this point, only flurries are expected.
“It’s another system we’ll have to keep an eye on,” Snyder said.
