The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said it is planning a $3.4 million project to replace water mains under Colesville Road in downtown Silver Spring.
Nearly two miles of pipes will be replaced, from MD Route 97 (Georgia Ave) to Interstate 495.
The work will begin on Monday, WSSC spokeswoman Ayoka Blandford said.
The pipe work is expected to be completed in the spring of 2019, WSSC said in a press release.
WSSC will replace 16-inch cast-iron pipes with zinc-coated ductile iron pipes that are expected to last about 100 years, the press release said. The current pipes were installed in 1923 and 1935, according to the utility.
WSSC might install some temporary lines to give homes and businesses a water supply until the project is complete.
The water and wastewater utility warned the public to expect heavy equipment, digging, noise, lane closures and parking restrictions.
Work will take place 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. WSSC will notify residents and businesses of any evening or night work (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) or weekend work (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
