Arlington Votes on “Missing Middle”

For years large single-family homes have been replacing older smaller single-family homes in Arlington county, making it difficult for the middle class to purchase and rent in the area.  The proposed “Missing Middle” would allow for development of 2-6 unit buildings on lots currently zoned for single family homes.

Arlington’s Planning Commission voted 8-0 to recommend that the proposition go to the Arlington County Board.  “We have a responsibility to consider what the impacts will be and how it works with competing policies,” said Commissioner Elizabeth Gearin. We don’t know if this will have the outcome that we want, or if it’ll have negative impacts — if we’ll be displacing potentially low-income minority home owners in favor of moderate-income renters.”

Some opponents to “Missing Middle” are asking the Commissioner to wait until impacts on infrastructure are considered.  Engineer and attorney David Gerk says residents are relying on an already leaky water distribution, sanitary sewer system and electric grid.  In terms of population, kids are already being taught in permanent classroom trailers.
