The City of Gaithersburg is located in Montgomery County, Maryland, northwest of Washington, DC. Gaithersburg is the fourth largest incorporated city in the state behind Baltimore, Frederick and Rockville.
The city is separated by I-270 into an eastern section and a western section. The eastern section is the older and original portion of Gaithersburg. The east includes the historic district of Old Town Gaithersburg as well as City Hall, Lakeforest Mall, and the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. The western section was designed for New Urbani sm. It includes staples such as the Kentlands and Lakelands communities, the Washingtonian Center (The Rio) and the new Crown Farm shopping center.
Major employers headquartered in Gaithersburg are the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), IBM, Lockheed Martin, MedImmune and Sodexo.
The city is served by Montgomery County Public Schools with 19 elementary schools, 7 middle schools and 3 high schools. Gaithersburg prides itself on being on of the most ethnically and economically diverse areas in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area and the state of Maryland.
With over 20 city parks and 12 community facilities, Gaithersburg provides a multitude of activities for kids and adults alike. Every fall, the annual Celebrate Gaithersburg Street Festival brings city residents as well as non-residents together with live music, food, arts and crafts and more. Kids long for the summer knowing that the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair will be in town! With carnival rides, animals and entertainment, the fair is a wonderful experience for the whole family!
