The Tommy Joe’s Bar and Grill in Gaithersburg will close after New Year’s Eve, its owner said.
Alan Pohoryles, the owner, said Thursday that there had been “a lot of issues” with staff and management and other problems at the Kentlands location.
The Bethesda location will remain open, he said.
“The business was not good enough to recover, so we’re just going to cut our losses and focus on Bethesda,” Pohoryles said. “We definitely appreciate the Kentlands residents who supported us, but we weren’t doing enough business to sustain a restaurant there.”
The news of the closing was first reported by the MoCo Show on Twitter.
The neighborhood bar and restaurant had operated under the Tommy Joe’s name for a little more than a year. In the three years before that, the space at 311 Kentland Blvd. was Brasserie Beck and Boulevard Tavern.
Pohoryles, who lives a few miles from Kentlands, said he was saddened to see it hadn’t become the gathering space he had hoped. He said the final decision came after recent negotiations with the landlord.
In early 2016, the Tommy Joe’s in Bethesda moved from its longtime spot on Montgomery Avenue into a space on the corner of Norfolk and Cordell avenues.
“It’s doing very well,” Pohoryles said of the Bethesda location. “We plan on it for years to come.”
