What You Need to Know About the Cherry Blossom Festival

The 2023 Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC is fast approaching with the blossoms’ peak bloom expected to occur between March 22-25.  The trees have already entered into stage one and two, the green bud and visible florets, and will have a total of six stages, ending with peak bloom.  There are eleven different varieties of cherry blossoms in D.C. with the most dominate being the white and pink Yoshino and Kwanzan.

Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gifted 3,000  cherry blossom trees to Washington, D.C. in 1912.  The festival which celebrates Japanese culture and international friendship and will run from March 20 through April 16.    The Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge will light up in pick for the second year in a row to honor the festival on March 20.  A treat for the kids is that Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be the grand marshals of this year’s parade!
